Bucket List

Take a look at your footprints on the sands of time.

"Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time.

Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o'er life's solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again."

—Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882)

I have a question for you.

What "footprints" are you leaving to inspire and teach others?

As you answer this question, don't allow fear to limit you.

There is no unreasonable outcomes or goals.

However, sometimes there are unreasonable timelines.

Keep in mind the words of recording artist Jackson Browne.

"Don't be afraid to go out on a limb. That's where the fruit is."

Building Optimism

Optimism is the ability to look at the brighter side of life and to maintain a positive attitude, even in the face of adversity.

The ability to bounce back from disappointment.

I have some questions about optimism.

Optimism involves always believing that everything will turn out well. Right?

No! That is merely poor Reality Testing.

Optimism means always giving yourself pep talks - just keep saying positive things to yourself. Right?

No! First, you won’t hear the pep talks after a short while because you know that they are phony. Second, you are in danger of hiding too much from real negatives that you need to notice and plan around.

Then what is Optimism, really?

You practice Optimism when you choose to view setbacks, downturns, and disappointments as temporary rather than permanent. Even if times are bad right now, you recognize that this need not be a permanent condition. Things can and probably will improve.

You practice Optimism when you choose to see misfortune as situational rather than pervasive. For example, your company is reducing its workforce and has let you go. While this may be a bad situation, it does not mean that you are an undesirable employee and will never work again.

You practice Optimism when you choose not to personalize bad events with statements like “Just my luck.” “This always happens to me.” “I have a black cloud over my life.” “I always screw things up.”

While optimists recognize that there are elements in a failed situation that they may not have been able to control, they are realistic about the aspects that they can control. If their performance in one of those aspects was poor, they take heart in the fact that it is within their control to do better next time.

Learn more about training your brain to think more optimistically from my show earlier this week.

What is coaching?

What is coaching?

I get this question a lot.

Here are some of my thoughts on that question.

Coaching is the single best way to accelerate the process of accomplishing your most important outcomes.

Coaching is frequently categorized into two main areas: PERSONAL and PROFESSIONAL.  I have found that it is often difficult to separate these two areas. In other words, a person who initially comes to coaching to make improvements in their professional life may find that things really begin to get better when we focus on their personal life, and vice versa.

Over the years, I have acquired the knowledge, training, and experience to work in a variety of areas that you may be struggling with.

In general, you may be a good candidate for coaching if you need help with any of the following:

Developing a plan or strategy
Often individuals want help developing a strategy or plan in order to achieve a desired result in the shortest period of time, with the least amount of stress.

Implementing a change or improvement
Individuals frequently want to change or improve something. For example, they may want to change jobs or improve a relationship.

Clarifying desires
Individuals are commonly looking to figure out what they REALLY want in their personal and/or business lives.

Overcoming frustrations
Many people want to work on overcoming the personal limitations or gaps in self-awareness that are hindering their success and enjoyment of life.

HERE IS HOW THE COACHING PROCESS USUALLY BEGINS:

Initially, we will talk on the phone and discuss your current situation and objectives. If we both feel there is a match, we'll agree to work together.

Next, we will decide on the coaching program that's right for you. In my experience, the longer you work with a coach, the more you achieve. For example, a couple of golf lessons might help your game, but naturally, working with the club pro for a year is going to make you a heck of a lot better on the golf course!

Before the first session you will complete a personal profile that will help us both quickly assess where you are, where you've been, and where you want to go.

Then, we will meet via phone for your first session, where we'll discuss the profile and begin the coaching process, with the ultimate goal of helping you clarify and achieve what you truly desire.

TYPICALLY, YOU CAN EXPECT THE FOLLOWING TO OCCUR DURING A COACHING CALL:

We will review and discuss any homework that you have been working on. The purpose of the homework is simply to provide you with insights, new perspectives, and reaction oriented items that will help you get where you want to go faster. Often it will include things like self-observation, a reading suggestion, or a practice to begin.

We will look at what you have accomplished and achieved since our last session.

We will discuss the challenges you are currently facing, and come up with strategies to eliminate or overcome them.

We will agree on what you need to work on in-between sessions.

Each and every person is unique. Your needs and desires will be different from any other individual, and will vary from session to session. Therefore, we will focus on what is most pressing to you on each call. I will always be prepared for your session, but never attached to a specific agenda!

AN IMPORTANT NOTE TO ALL PROSPECTIVE CLIENTS

It is very important for me to correctly assess if I am the right partner for you. I am extremely committed to growth, success, and happiness of each individual I work with. I only work with a limited number of individuals who are serious about taking their lives to the next level. If I don't think I am right for the job, I will let you know immediately, and try to refer you to a more appropriate resource.

COACHING PROGRAMS

I currently offer the following one-on-one coaching programs:

The Intro Program

This is for those clients who would like to simply explore what coaching is all about, and/or are not yet ready to make a longer term commitment.

The intro program consists of four 45 minute coaching calls.

You can expect this series to last between 1-2 months, depending on the frequency of our sessions together. I initially meet with most of my intro clients weekly, and move to bi-weekly when more time becomes needed between sessions to complete assignments, process what we've discussed, or practice a new skill or concept.

Relationship Coaching Program

The Relationship Enhancer Coaching Course is a 12-week curriculum-based program designed to show you how to create the relationship of your dreams. This program is designed for couples to go through together, however, individuals can go participate as well.  You will learn the fundamentals of relationship success. In this process, you will find out what you and your partner most need from each other to experience love, respect, and connection. Also emphasized in this course is the notion that what makes a relationship successful and fulfilling will change constantly. As each individual grows and new developmental challenges are encountered by the couple, the rules can change. Therefore, ongoing dialogue and healthy communication is necessary for continued relationship enhancement.

Business Building Coaching Program

This coaching program is for anyone interested in starting a financially viable internet based business.  It will involve examining yourself to determine the best niche for you to build your business in.  This will depend on your interests, values, experiences, credentials, etc...  Once you define your niche I will walk you through creating your business.  Yes creating it.  Not talking about it.  At the end of this program you will have a website (built by my company) that will allow you to 1) generate revenue, 2) impact others in a positive way, 3) develop your ideal life style.

Mastery Coaching Programs

Mastery coaching programs are for those clients who have completed previous coaching or personal development programs and are focused on highly specialized outcomes for their lives.

My philosophy and approach to working with couples and individuals can be described as collaborative and solution-focused. I specialize in helping individuals identify and overcome limitations in their thinking, and have a knack for helping couples and individuals find rapid solutions to long-standing challenges. As many of the newer schools of psychotherapy acknowledge, there is a strong connection between an individual's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Therefore, creating a slight shift in any of these areas can lead to creating profound change.

P.S.   Are you connected to your passion and purpose?

Shift happens...

I have mentioned in previous messages thing such as...

Your thoughts make a difference.

The environments you put yourself in make a difference.

Your emotions make a difference.

I came across some cool research that reinforces the notion that your MINDSET MATTERS.

What you focus on makes a difference.

Small shifts in your focus can make a difference.

Here is the Source: Crum, A. & Langer, E. (2007) "Mindset Matters: Exercise as a Placebo," Psychological Science, 18, 2.

Here is the ABSTRACT--In a study testing whether the relationship between exercise and health is moderated by one's mind-set, 84 female room attendants working in seven different hotels were measured on physiological health variables affected by exercise. Those in the informed condition were told that the work they do (cleaning hotel rooms) is good exercise and satisfies the Surgeon General's recommendations for an active lifestyle. Examples of how their work was exercise were provided. Subjects in the control group were not given this information. Although actual behavior did not change, 4 weeks after the intervention, the informed group perceived themselves to be getting significantly more exercise than before. As a result, compared with the control group, they showed a decrease in weight, blood pressure, body fat, waist-to-hip ratio, and body mass index. These results support the hypothesis that exercise affects health in part or in whole via the placebo effect.

Pretty powerful stuff, huh?

Have a great weekend.

Remember, shift happens...

Your Bucketlist and Beyond...

Do You Believe in Magic?
By Mike Davison

You have the power to create magic.

Human beings (ALL HUMAN BEINGS) are unique from other
“creatures”, as we have the ability to radically change our
life by changing our personal story.

While we all have the capacity to re-author our most dominant
stories, not everyone believes they have this capacity.

Some people are addicted to their story.

Some people are addicted to their chronic negative emotions.

Some people are addicted to whining and complaining.

Consider the following:

Your current life circumstances are a reflection of your core
beliefs about yourselves, others and the world around you.

Who you are is a manifestation of your most dominant thoughts.
Put another way, “As you think, so shall you be”. What you think,
you become.

Your moment-to-moment words, thoughts, feelings and behaviors
are a result of your most dominant personal stories.

You ultimately can t see what you can t imagine.

You ultimately can t create what is incompatible with your most
dominant stories.

This is why we are often creatures of habit, continually re-creating the circumstances of our life.

Albert Einstein once wrote “The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of
thinking we were at when we created them”. In other words, in order to change, we need to change
our beliefs.

So how do we do this?

Thanks for asking.

You need to first get clear about where you currently are in your life. Don t downplay or minimize.
This is not a time to be delusional.

Second. Get clear about where you want to be.

Third. Get clear about the thoughts, images and behaviors that you would need to have to create
your most desired outcomes.

Fourth. Align your daily thoughts, images, and behaviors with your desired outcomes.

Here are some quick and simple daily activities that can help shape and reinforce the necessary
consciousness to create your ideal life:

VISUALIZATION. Your behavior will match your image of yourself.
Spend a few moments each morning clearly imaging your desired
outcomes. The length of time is less important than having your
images specific and vivid.

DECLARATIONS. Write several declarative statements that are
worded in the positive, present tense, are highly specific, and
inspiring. State them out loud each day with TOTAL BEHAVIOR
- with complete alignment of your behavior, thinking, emotion
and physiology.

CREATE A DREAMBOARD. Include words, phrases, pictures and
anything that symbolizes your desired outcomes. Look at your
dreamboard daily.

WRITE A PURPOSE STATEMENT. Similar to your declarations, use
emotionally charged words, state it in the positive, keep it brief.

Write it as if you have already created and are living out your
purpose. Keep this statement in your planner and review it daily.

KEEP A PURPOSE JOURNAL. Each morning write down at least THREE
things you WILL do that day in the service of your purpose. Identify
specific action steps. This is not a time to be mushy. Be precise. Think
of these as your DAILY MARCHING ORDERS. Make a nightly entry, identifying
what you did or accomplished each day that was in the service of your purpose.

MANAGE YOUR SELF-TALK. Smash the ANTS in Your life - Automatic
Negative Thoughts. Learn to notice, catch and interrupt unproductive and limiting
patterns of thinking.

USE LANGUAGE OF INTENTION. Avoid destructive language like can t, I ll try, I have to…

ASK FOR WHAT YOU NEED. Ask and you shall receive - unless you
don t. Keep in mind, if you don t get what you ask for you are no worse off.

TEACH YOUR PURPOSE. Research is clear that teaching something
helps us understand it at a greater level.

One other important aspect of creating and sustaining the necessary consciousness to
help you achieve your dreams is to surround yourself with the right people.

You won t achieve greatness hanging out with complainers.

Does this all sound like too much work?

Only you can answer that.

However, like any habits and rituals, once they are created they
become automatic and effortless.

I don t quote shampoo commercials much, but as I heard
pronounced in one shampoo commercial -

“Your worth it!”

You really are.

Your life is.

Your dreams and goals are.

Your legacy is.

Have a great holiday season!

Your worth it!

Power up to create some magic in the upcoming year.

Transcend Fear....

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we’re liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”-Marrianne Williamson
In An Invitation to Personal Peace, We devote an entire chapter on how to work through fear instead of letting fear work on you. Let me ask you a question: What dream has fear taken away from your life? How does that make you feel? Some years ago, I noticed a certain fear confronting me whenever I started to write a book. The Inner voice would go something like this "You're getting to big for your britches!" Can you guess what happened next? Okay, I'll tell you. Frustration with myself for giving in to a voice that kept me small in the world. Frustration and Inner Peace aren't a great match. This all changed when I changed my reaction to my fear. Instead of giving into the fear I used thought and action to confront it. I started saying " We'll I'm up to something big."(thought) I then proceeded to write (action). This led to me to Personal Peace. If I listened to the voice that limited my spirit, An Invitation to Personal Peace may not have been born. Use the 5 simple exercises today in An Invitation to Personal Peace to walk through fear with boldness and courage. Your desires are waiting for you. Don't disappoint them. Believe in yourself today. Make your Destiny a masterpiece. Your Destiny Doctor Dr.Mike Davison

Some real life bucket list stories

TOM WHARTON from the Salt Lake Tribune wrote an inspiring piece about real life bucket list stories.  Here it goes...

Cynthia Minor has metastatic breast cancer. Doctors say it could take her life.
But that hasn't stopped the Erda woman from thinking about what she'd like to do before she goes, much like the characters in the new movie "The Bucket List," which opened Friday in Utah theaters.
Although tumors have invaded her spine, Minor is counting on recent radiation treatments to help her ride her horse again. She also wants to see the Kentucky Derby, visit a number of historic sites in the U.S. and start her own business. Where people with her disease once rarely lived beyond three years, new treatment has extended life expectancy to five to 10 years after initial diagnosis.
"I have thought of a lot of things I would never do," said the Tooele County woman who has trained horses most of her life. "The doctor said that with my spine damaged, he didn't think I would ride again. But he reneged on that and said I might be able to support the back. . . . I've come to the point that I can't do some of the things I want to. I can't stay up the whole day.
"But I am holding to the fact that a healing time is coming and I can do more things. It is of major importance getting back on a horse. Even if I don't teach or show again, I want to get back on again."
Minor, who has taken long-term disability from her job, said it's hard not to feel sorry for herself, especially after she felt so much better once her chemotherapy ended.
But trying to remain optimistic in the face of pain and often discouraging medical news helps sustain many Utahns, just as it does the fictional characters played by Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman in "The Bucket List."
A life-threatening illness, even with a good long-term prognosis, can force people to focus on the future.
Blessing in disguise: Strange as it might sound, 17-year-old Jordan Yates says a diagnosis of testicular cancer changed his life for the better.
After Yates was diagnosed last July, his burning desire was to attend a seminar by Tony Robbins, an inspirational speaker who helps students set life goals. The Utah Make-A-Wish Foundation helped him attend a recent seminar in Phoenix.
"I always lived my life in accordance with God," said Yates, who along with his father, Rod, is changing his last name to Bourne to signify a choice to be reborn. "I was not afraid of death, but I wanted to know whether I was meant to live or die. I wasn't going to go in confusion. That's what kills people.
"Me and my dad took a long vacation to San Diego. We had many hours of fasting and praying. I did not move off my knees. I got a clear answer that I was meant to live and that I would be completely healed. I don't know how, but there is no doubt in my mind that I was meant to live."
Yates calls his cancer, now in remission, one of his greatest blessings because it forced him to work on relationships and make the transition from boy to man. He still has long-term goals: to join his dad selling real estate and become an inspirational speaker, as well as travel the world.
In "The Bucket List," two strangers are thrown together in a hospital room. One man (played by Freeman) has put family ahead of money and personal needs. The other (Nicholson) spent most of his life acquiring money for selfish reasons.
Both are diagnosed with terminal cancer and told they've got six months. Freeman's character starts writing a "bucket list" - things he always wanted to do before "kicking the bucket" - but tosses it on the floor like a discarded dream.
But Nicholson's character adds to the list and the new friends go off on a round-the-world adventure that includes sky diving, driving race cars and visiting dream locations.
Social workers and doctors say that scenario, in varying degrees, often plays out in real life.

Reordered priorities: John Conway, a social worker at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, said he has known patients to make actual lists.
"Suddenly, when this diagnosis happens, people feel an urgency to start mending relationships damaged in the past or to get closer to people," he said. "Cancer helps people reorganize their priorities and look at their values in general. They start to look at what is important in life and to achieve things they were putting off."
Tami Silvester was diagnosed with kidney cancer in March 2006. She lived in a large home with a backyard pool in Layton and pulled down a six-figure salary. While her prognosis is good, she needs supplemental oxygen, had to quit her job and take medical disability, and has moved to a small one-story Rose Park home.
She and her husband traveled a great deal with her former job, and Silvester is now more interested in simplifying her life.
"It doesn't have to be any big grand thing, but something quiet," said Silvester, mentioning Sunday family dinners or possibly writing a play. "Maybe this is my chance to do something with my life in a different arena that I could never imagine that I could do."
Unlike the movie, where the Nicholson character has enough money to underwrite an adventurous "bucket list," finances often limit real people's lists. They have more reasonable goals.
"I see so many patients whose last wish is to go to Wendover again," said Sandy Jensen, hospice team leader for Community Nursing Services. "They would do anything to make it to Wendover. Perhaps it is because it is realistic and not too far away."
Jensen said making a list of things to do before dying can help family members who want to meet a loved one's final wishes. That puts the focus on more positive things.

Check your list: DuWayne Williams' cancer is in remission. The 73-year-old describes himself as in relatively good shape, though he admits his attitude sometimes doesn't match. The West Valley City man's main goal after hearing he had cancer was to restore a 1936 Ford, something he accomplished with the help of friends. Then he fulfilled another wish.
"I always wanted a Corvette and now I have one," he said.
Physician Rick Frame of Utah Cancer Specialists said he encourages patients with a cancer diagnosis to make a list of the things that are most important to them.
"These are things you want to do, places to go and relatives you want to see," he said. "Start checking it off. You are as healthy now as you maybe ever will be. Take advantage of these opportunities as you can. . . . Time slips so quickly away. Time is precious. This is great advice for everybody."
Chris Sharer, CEO of Make-A-Wish Foundation of Utah, helps fulfill the dreams of many younger patients with life-threatening diseases.
"We're hoping that granting a wish gives hope to keep fighting the illness," she said, adding that "this is exactly what Make-A-Wish is for. It is to say that joy and dreams are an important part of life. The minute we let our dreams go, what's left?"

    Sharing their dreams
We asked people with life-threatening illnesses and the health professionals who work with them about making lists of things to do in the time they have left. Some activities they mentioned:
    * Take one last trip to Wendover
    * Go on a cruise
    * Become a motivational speaker
    * Vacation in Europe
    * Go on a church mission
    * See the Kentucky Derby
    * Ride a horse again
    * Restore a classic car
    * Start a Sunday family dinner tradition
    * Simplify life
    * Write a play
